United Nations General Assembly passes resolution on improving global road safety

14 APRIL 2004 -- For the first time, the United Nations General Assembly discussed and adopted a resolution on improving global road safety (Res A/58/289). The resolution, which calls for countries to take note of the recommendations contained in the joint WHO/World Bank World report on road traffic injury prevention, also invites the World Health Organization to act as coordinator on road safety issues within the United Nations system. The resolution was cosponsored by more than 50 countries.
