APEC ministers of transport commit to actions to support Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020
On 14 September 2011, the 7th Transportation Ministerial Meeting of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was held in San Francisco, USA. In the context of this meeting, Dr Etienne Krug, Director of WHO's Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability, gave a presentation on the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020 to ministers from the 21 APEC member countries. The session was introduced by Mr Ray LaHood, Secretary of Transportation of the USA. Interventions were made following the presentation by the ministers from Australia, Canada, Chile, Indonesia, Thailand, and Viet Nam all expressing strong support for the Decade. Secretary Lahood announced that the Department of Transportation of the USA will support a meeting of APEC countries on traffic injury data collection as one of its Decade activities. The Minister of Transport from Viet Nam accepted to host the meeting in 2012.
