World Road Congress draws attention to Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020
From 26-30 September 2011, the XXIVth World Road Congress was hosted in Mexico City, Mexico. Since 1908, this Congress has been organized every four years by PIARC, the World Road Association, a global entity of government agencies in charge of road infrastructure as well as private companies and individuals.
The meeting was opened by the President of Mexico and attended by more than 30 ministers and more than 4,000 delegates. "Roads for a better life: mobility, sustainability and development" was the theme for this year's Congress. During the five-day meeting, the packed agenda addressed environmental responsibility, financing, safe mobility, the impact of climate change on infrastructure, and the sustainability and security of road networks among other topics.
Dr Etienne Krug, Director of WHO's Department of Violence and Injury Prevention and Disability, gave a keynote plenary address on road safety concepts and opportunities. In a parallel session, representatives from IDB, PIARC, World Bank, WHO, YOURS and other UN Road Safety Collaboration members presented the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020. The information was well received and generated considerable discussion.
On the occasion of the World Road Congress, PIARC issued a declaration in support of the Decade committing to support the development of national road safety policies.
