Global Knowledge Observatory

Government decision- and policy-makers in low- and middle-income countries can turn to very few credible, unbiased sources of research evidence and related types of support when faced with difficult decisions about health care and health.

The Global Knowledge Obervatory (GKO) would function as a knowledge broker in pursuing the following goal: support decision-making in government health departments in low- and middle-income countries related to health system developments required to achieve the health-related Millennium Development Goals. This goal is phrased in terms of supporting decision-making rather than promoting the application of research evidence because the former speaks to the needs of government policy makers, not the desires of the producers and purveyors of research. The GKO’s success will hinge on it being perceived as a credible, unbiased source of research evidence.
