Capacity building in research ethics

Health research is increasingly conducted in developing countries giving rise to numerous ethical issues and challenges during the research process.

Case book on ethical issues in international health research (coming soon)

This casebook collects 63 case studies, each of which raises an important and difficult ethical issue connected with planning, reviewing, or conducting health-related research. The purpose is to contribute to thoughtful analysis of these issues by researchers and members of research ethics committees particularly those involved with studies that are conducted or sponsored internationally.

The collection of case studies is envisioned principally as a tool to aid educational programmes, from short workshops on research ethics to in-service learning for scientists and REC members, to formal degree or certificate courses. Therefore, a teaching guide has been included.

Interactive online course

An interactive online course is also being developed to assist researchers, policy makers and others in understanding and promoting ethical research to ensure the safety and rights of research participants. Two of the modules (Module 1 and Module 2) have been completed and pilot tested at the end of 2007. The remaining modules are currently under development.
