Global monitoring of action on the social determinants of health: a proposed framework and basket of core indicators

Member States and any other organizations or individuals are invited to contribute their feedback on the proposed social determinants of health (SDH) action monitoring framework and its indicators presented in the consultation document.

The framework and its indicators reflect the pledges made in the Rio Political Declaration on the Social Determinants of Health, which was endorsed by the World Health Assembly (WHA) in the WHA resolution 65.8.

The framework, indicators, and data sources are derived from the background paper for and the recommendations from the Technical Meeting on Measuring and Monitoring Action on the Social Determinants of Health held on 20-22 June 2016 in Ottawa, Canada. The background paper was prepared by the Working Group for Monitoring Action on the Social Determinants of Health.

You are invited to comment on any aspect of the proposed framework and indicators, but we especially welcome your feedback on the following questions:

  • Do the framework objectives cover the pledges made in the Rio Political Declaration?
  • Do you recommend other indicators – either as preferred indicator or place-holder indicators?
  • Do you recommend other data sources for proposed indicators?

You are invited to email your feedback to:
