Though many useful reagents and techniques were developed during the course of previous SDI  funding, none of those investments have yet resulted in a distribution-ready test. In the meantime, industry involvement in diagnostic development has increased in this area. With limited funding at its disposal, a strategic decision was made in 2000 for SDI to shift away from direct investment in product research and development and focus on the setting of standards for diagnostics evaluation and on the evaluation of commercially available STI diagnostics appropriate for primary health care settings in developing countries.
