SDI is promoting the development and evaluation of diagnostics that are ASSURED:
  • Affordable
       - by those at risk of infection
  • Sensitive
       - few false negatives
  • Specific
       - few false positive
  • User-friendly:
       - simple to perform: 3-4 steps, with minimal training
  • Rapid and Robust
       - rapid: to enable treatment at first visit
       - robust: does not require refrigerated storage
  • Equipment-free
       - easily collected non-invasive specimens, e.g. urine, saliva
  • Delivered
       - delivered to end-users

Current priorities for SDI are the development and evaluation of diagnostics for the following diseases:

Disease Indication Ideal specimen

CHLAMYDIA
GONorrhoea

 

Screening of high risk population

Support of syndromic management in high and low disease prevalence settings

Woman: vaginal swab, urine
Man: urine

Syphilis Screening of pregnant women 
(to distinguish active from past infection in endemic settings)
Whole blood, saliva
