Emergency and essential surgical care

Surgery to remove a patient's tumour.
WHO / EURO / Gilles Reboux

Surgery and anaesthesia straddle numerous disciplines and intersect with many disease-specific conditions. The Emergency and Essential Surgical Care Programme works externally, as well as internally, through numerous WHO programmes and departments, to integrate and align independent efforts to strengthen health systems and improve access to safe, timely and affordable surgical care as a way of achieving universal health coverage.
