GIEESC biennial meeting
2011 San Diego
The biennial WHO GIEESC meeting was held on 9 November 2011, at San Diego, California, USA. It was hosted in collaboration with the University of California, San Diego .There is an optional Post -GIEESC program during 10-11 November 2011 in San Diego, California, Alliance for Surgery and Anaesthesia Presence (ASAP).
2009 Mongolia
Hosted by the Ministry of Health of Mongolia, the meeting highlighted the need to expand the implementation of WHO surgical standards, refine monitoring and evaluation tools, and increase advocacy to improve emergency and essential surgical care towards strengthening health systems.
2007 Tanzania
Hosted by the Ministry of Health of the United Republic of Tanzania, the result of the meeting emphasized the need for research addressing the unmet surgical burden.
2005 Geneva
Held at the WHO headquarters, this meeting represented the first coordinated global effort of multidisciplinary stakeholders to meet the need for emergency, anesthesia, and surgical care in primary healthcare facilities worldwide.
Consensus at this meeting resulted in:
- Establishment of the Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC) with the secretariat held at the WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland
- Development of GIEESC MedNet, an online forum for communication and consultation
