Exxon Mobil Foundation provides funding to help scale-up malaria interventions
Exxon Mobil Foundation is providing US $ 500 000 to find solutions to scale up malaria interventions. Funding is going towards two projects.
The first is to increase the capacity in Africa to scale up the delivery of the artemisinin-combination treatments (ACTs). Countries receiving funding from the Affordable Medicines Facility for malaria (AMFm) to buy the treatments are developing a comprehensive checklist to assess progress made and ways to further improve research performance. The countries include Cambodia, Ghana, Kenya, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Tanzania and Uganda.
The second project is exploring whether community health workers can diagnose and treat malaria and pneumonia. The goal is to increase appropriate diagnosis and treatment by not delaying the right treatment by the wrong diagnosis. The work is taking place in Ghana and Burkina Faso.
This is the fourth year that the foundation has funded TDR. Past support has included training to researchers in African countries, research into community health workers and delivery of anti-malarials via private shops.
