Dengue classification process potential model

TDR news item
15 August 2012

The process for reviewing the development, evidence base and application of the revised dengue case classification has been published in Pathogens and Global Health. It found a potential new model that could be used for other disease classifications. A revision of a disease case classification is of course a major change, not only for health care professionals but also for surveillance officers, researchers, health financing institutions and of course, the public. Consequently, the research team set up a multi-stage process that included all these groups. The analysis showed that the revised dengue case classification is better able to standardize clinical management, raise awareness about unnecessary interventions, match patient categories with specific treatment instructions, and make the key messages of patient management understandable for all health care staff dealing with dengue patients. The study was financially supported by TDR, the European Commission and the Wellcome Trust.
