A staunch supporter of one of TDR’s co-sponsors passed away in early February in New York. Tim Rothermel was Director of the former Division for Global and Interregional Projects at United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and became the UNDP representative to TDR in April 1985 (TDR has four co-sponsors – UNICEF, UNDP, the World Bank and WHO). During his 10+ years with TDR, Tim was able to secure close to US$ 31 million from UNDP for TDR research and capacity building. He was an influential leader in global health in the 1980s and 1990s and one of his achievements, together with Barry Bloom (a former Chairman of TDR's Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee), was the establishment of the International Vaccine Institute in South Korea. He went on to become UNDP’s representative in Palestine and worked for peace in the Middle East. TDR extends its deepest condolences to his wife Joan and children Sara and David. We will miss this true UN professional and friend of TDR.
