New open access journal Infectious Diseases of Poverty launched
A new open access journal, Infectious Diseases of Poverty, has been launched by BioMed Central, in partnership with the National Institute of Parasitic Diseases, China CDC (NIPD). The inaugural issue, which will have a limited print run at the Second Global Symposium on Health Systems Research 31 October – 3 November in Beijing, contains a number of themed articles on “Health system framework for controlling the infectious diseases of poverty”. The articles cover treatment, strategies and innovative programmes which provide a linkage between policy level and academic research. One of these, Infectious disease emergence and global change: thinking systemically in a shrinking world by Colin D Butler, challenges some of the current dogmas and gives a new perspective on global change and emerging infectious diseases.
The journal publishes original work (scoping reviews and articles) on trans-disciplinary research for the control of infectious diseases which affect mainly poor populations. These include various aspects of the biology of pathogens and vectors, diagnosis and detection, treatment and case management, epidemiology and modeling, zoonotic hosts and animal reservoirs, control strategies and implementation, new technologies and application. Transdisciplinary or multisectoral effects on health systems, ecohealth, environmental management, and innovative technology are also considered.
