Eight researchers – 4 women and 4 men –have been selected for 1-year African region small grants. The proposals cover implementation research to address research questions on health systems, malaria and tuberculosis. The call received a lot of attention, with 139 proposals received from 29 countries.

Dr Martin Ota, from the WHO African regional office on research, publication and library services that coordinated this activity, says, “The results of these projects will yield evidence that will likely be used to increase effective delivery of health services and programmes, which is what is needed in the countries.” TDR provides small research grants to each region of the World Health Organization, designed to meet specific needs identified by national, regional and headquarters offices.

The 1-year projects will be conducted in 2014.
