Summary

This report details the discussions and recommendations made by an informal consultation on clinical neurological investigations required for patients treated with artemisinin compounds and derivatives. The consultation addressed concerns about possible risks of neurotoxicity associated with the use of artemisinin compounds being developed for the treatment of severe malaria. It aimed to review and outline appropriate clinical studies to rule out neurotoxicity in humans.

The report sets out a statement of issues, presents details of discussions, and lists recommendations on possible study sites for neurological studies, appropriate methods and investigations, Artesunate Phase IV field trials, retrospective studies and prospective studies. A list of participants, a discharge form, and references are also given.
