Outcomes of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) 2012 Substantive Session
New York, United States
23 July 2012
WHO organized a lunchtime seminar during the General Segment of the Substantive Session of ECOSOC on Friday 20 July at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The briefing aimed to raise awareness on the focus of the report; the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) at country level and the contribution of the different specialized United Nations and non-United Nations agencies to this work. Keynote speakers included Dr Douglas Bettcher, Director WHO Tobacco Free Initiative; Mr Vijay Trivedi, Convention Secretariat to the WHO FCTC, and Mr Francis Thompson, Framework Convention Alliance.
The UN Secretary-General's report to ECOSOC on the activities of the United Nations Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on tobacco control was presented on 23 July 2012. Following the presentation, the Members of ECOSOC adopted a resolution on United Nations system-wide coherence on tobacco control. Among other things, the resolution encourages the Task Force members to promote the integration of tobacco control and the WHO FCTC within United Nations Development Assistance Frameworks. It also requests the UN Secretary-General, in collaboration with Director-General of the World Health Organization, to integrate the WHO FCTC within the work of the Political Declaration of the High-level meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and Control of Noncommunicable diseases.
