Communications and media
TFI is committed to raising awareness of the threat posed by the global tobacco epidemic and of the steps that can be taken to reduce tobacco use and save millions of lives this century.
Working with partners and countries, TFI informs the public, civil society and governments about the course of the epidemic, the actions that are being taken to reverse it, and effective strategies to reduce tobacco use. TFI advocates for tobacco control by supporting local, national and international media campaigns and workshops, as well as by using an increasing number of multimedia tools including video clips and animations posted on YouTube.
In 2008, WHO produced its first WHO Report on the Global Tobacco Epidemic, attracting extensive media coverage. The report presents the first comprehensive worldwide analysis of tobacco use and control efforts. It introduces the MPOWER package, a set of six key tobacco control measures that reflect and build on the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.
World No Tobacco Day is celebrated annually on 31 May and is a high profile event in countries around the world, serving as a focal point in the year for a vast number of tobacco control advocacy activities. Each year, WHO selects a theme months in advance of the day itself to ensure that a strong and unified tobacco control message resonates around the globe.
An understanding of tobacco industry practices is fundamental to effective tobacco control. Recognizing this fact, TFI monitors and draws global attention to the activities and practices of tobacco companies wherever they operate.
