Opening session

Selection of the chair by the working group: Ambassador Luiz Felipe de Seixas Corrêa, Permanent Representative of Brazil to the Office of the United Nations and other international organizations in Geneva, is nominated and the nomination is accepted by the delegates. He takes his seat as chair of the IGWG. The agenda is approved.

Activities of the Secretariat since the adoption of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, presented by TFI's director, Dr Vera da Costa e Silva.

Discussions and comments on the report followed.

Unveiling of the Death Clock by LEE Jong-wook, WHO Director-General

10:45 Unveiling of the Death Clock by LEE Jong-wook. The Death Clock measures the accumulated tobacco-related deaths since the first working group for the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, on 25 October 1999. When WHO's Director-General unveiled the clock, the number of deaths was close to 19 million.

Next item in the agenda was the status of the WHO FCTC.

After discussing the status of the WHO FCTC, the chair introduced the next agenda item 6: Draft rules of procedure for the Conference of the Parties, including criteria for participation of observers.

The Chair gave the floor to the NGO International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease for their statement.
