Mass Media Campaign Against Tobacco
Aligarh, India, 31 May 2007

A mass media campaign comprising of posters and handbills was undertaken in the University campus and adjoining areas on the World No Tobacco Day. A health education drive in all wards of J N Medical College Hospital was also undertaken. Medical students after initial training took round of the wards discussed issues related with tobacco with patients and their attendants. A poster competition was organised in which a number of students participated.

Oral Cancer Awareness and Anti-Tobacco Campaign

  • Competitions to be held in: a) Painting: 3 categories; b) Song writing; c) TV spot; d) Radio jingle/message. Also: Panel of 2 judges selected to judge each competition. Criteria for selection has been fixed for all competitions. Last date of submission of entries: 19th May 2007. Painting competition to be held on 19th May 2007. Results will be finalized the following week. Prize distribution will be done on 31st May 2007
  • Drama show - Meeting held with Durtlang Leitan South K.T.P members and theme explained. Drama to be shown on WNTD programme after further discussion and finalization.
  • Talk Show - To be held on the theme at studios of three local cable networks, DDK and at AIR, Aizawl station. Invitations have been sent out to distinguished persons and public figures of the state to participate for the shows. There will be four participants in each show. The shows will be telecasted and broadcasted on WNTD.
  • Developments of articles on WNTD theme - Four prolific writers of the state have been selected to compose articles on the WNTD theme. They will be submitting the articles by 15th May 2007 the latest, which will then be given to journals and magazines of repute for dissemination.
  • Anti-tobacco march & rally - This will be held on the morning of 31st May 2007. Various NGOs and students of different schools will participate in the march. Popular singers and local celebrities will give support. A special t-shirt has been developed for distribution to participants.
  • I.E.C. activities - New I.E.C materials in the form of pamphlet, posters, videos & audios and T-Shirt have been developed. These will be distributed among the public.
  • Programmes at district level -Deputy Commisioners of each district of the state have been requested to make arrangement for effective observation of the day.
  • Public meeting - The main programme will be observed on the day at Vanapa Hall, Aizawl where the Honorable Health Minister of Mizoram will grace the meeting as chief guest. This meeting will be marked by speeches, song and dance performances by local artists, drama show and prize distribution etc.

A noble venture in which the goal will be to raise awareness about oral cancer and the importance of prevention and early detection and to help the patients in need of support. We are starting this project on the World No Tobacco Day and will highlight the issue of the growing popularity of chewing or smokeless tobacco products, particularly among the youth and its high risk of oral cancer.

World No Tobacco Day 2007 - "SMOKE FREE ENVIRONMENT"

The publications will be released on the occasion of WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY 2007 in Delhi. The event will bring together leaders from all the stakeholders to understand in details about the benefits of our campaign and how each one of them can contribute to further strengthen our campaign to make Delhi and India a tobacco free country. A talk and a walk against tobacco
Bidar, India, 30-31 May 2007

A walk - Rally against tobacco and an awareness drive will be organized on 31st May 2007. 5000 pamphlets in local language, citing the harmful effects of tobacco will be distributed to the public. Two skits will be performed by students of dental college as part of the awareness programme at the busy ambedkar circle. Banners and Slogans will also be a part of the rally which will stress upon the theme of 100% smoke free environment. A memorandum will be submitted to the district commissioner at the end of the programme for strict enactment of anti-tobacco legislation and making work places smoke-free.

Declaration of Smoke-free Jhunjhunu on WNTD 2007

The Foundation began its tobacco control activities in this north-western district of Rajasthan State in July 2005. Following participation in WCTOH at Washington in July 2006, it was resolved to make its main city - Jhunjhunu city, the district headquarter, smoke-free by WNTD 2007. It has collaborations from the district legislature, the district administration, media, NGOs and the youth, which give the 'visibility' in the community. It has been supported by the grants from Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, WHO, India and Indian Oil Corporation Limited. The model will be useful for the State and the country to make the second level cities and the townships smoke-free. the organization will undertake the campaign to make the whole district of Jhunjhunu smoke-free by 31 May 2008 and the entire State by 31 May 2010.

Rally on WNTD 2007

The banners with anti tobacco messages, will be displayed at the important land marks of Vittal Vidyanagar, and on the rally route, extensively with the help of Department of Extention Programmes. Placards and educational leaflets are also distributed with the help of volunteers from Swaminarayan sect. Talk by dignitaries is also organized as a part of the event in the auditorium, by Professor (Dr) Mukharji, focusing largely on the theme of WNTD 2007. Skit by students of Ardi village, and display of movie related to tobacco addiction and hazards are also taking the prime focus of the overall event. Media is invited to document the whole of the event for the public display there by reaching the mass to raise the awareness on harmful effects of tobacco usage, thus making the event successful.
