African tobacco control
Target countries under the WHO Tobacco Free Initiative Africa project
WHO has identified 5 target countries under the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation funded project. The selection of countries was based on the number of factors that included level of implementation of tobacco control, geographical, linguistic consideration etc. Kenya, South Africa and Uganda are the initial three target countries where the WHO teams are working with the national governments and other relevant stakeholders to identify the challenges in advancing tobacco control . Country capacity assessments have been carried out in 2010 and key priority interventions identified.
In addition the WHO capacity development team and Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa (CTCA) will take up two more countries in 2011 viz. Angola and Mauritania.
Based on the lessons learnt in these targeted countries, the WHO capacity development team and CTCA will take up additional countries.
