Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI)

Gender and tobacco

Overview

Gender has been defined as the "socially determined roles for each sex." Factors related to gender are important to consider when examining why individuals initiate and continue to use tobacco as well as the most effective interventions to reduce tobacco use. It is often the case that most of the work conducted around the issue of "gender and tobacco" has a major focus on women. However, in the same way that the tobacco industry researches and designs specific campaigns targeted to each sex, it is also necessary to ensure that all aspects of tobacco control consider both the similarities as well as the unique characteristics of men and women.
