Healthier people - healthier budgets
Tobacco use is the main preventable cause of death. Each year, it kills nearly 6 million people, including more than 600,000 non smokers who were exposed to tobacco smoke.
The costs of tobacco use are shown by the enormous toll of disease and suffering. Economies also suffer from increased health care costs and decreased productivity.
Tobacco taxation is the most successful tool we have to tackle this problem. Increased taxes on tobacco products leading to increased prices is the most cost-effective measure to reduce consumption.
