WHO workshop on tobacco taxation for Ministry of Finance officials

The World Health Organization (WHO) held a workshop on tobacco taxation in Ankara, Turkey, from 26-30 September 2011. The Finance Ministries of 12 low and middle income countries from across the globe sent officials to participate in the workshop which included trainings on tobacco tax administration, tobacco industry monitoring, tobacco tax policy and implementation. Participants came from Bangladesh, China, Egypt, Mexico, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Thailand, Turkey, Ukraine, and Viet Nam.
The Ankara workshop was co-hosted by the Turkish Ministry of Finance (a recognized leader globally in implementing tobacco industry monitoring measures) and aimed to strengthen the technical capacity of tax administrations from high tobacco-burden countries as they act to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their tobacco tax systems to achieve public health and finance objectives.
