Tobacco Free Initiative (TFI)

The first session of the Conference of the Parties to the
WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control

Day 10 - Fri, 17 February

As envisaged by the President of the COP, both committees progressed well and were ready to meet in plenary for the adoption of the remaining decisions at around noon.

The session proceeded as expected, and documents regarding the permanent secretariat, protocols and guidelines and the establishment of a group of experts to study economically viable alternatives to tobacco growing and production were adopted.

Before closing the session, several delegates praised the commitment from countries, and the good running of the conference. One delegate commended the good organization and preparation, which, he said, allowed the Conference to work with the precision of a "swiss watch".

Another delegate asked for one minute of silence, to pay respect for the more than 161000 people that during the time of the conference had lost their lives due to tobacco, as a reminder of why we were there.

Three non-governmental organizations thanked countries for their commitment, and expressed their willingness to actively continue involved in the implementation process.

With that, the President closed the first session of the Conference of the Parties.

A press conference took place in the Palais des Nations at 13:45. Press release and highlights of the first tobacco treaty COP.
