United Nations Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control

The United Nations Ad Hoc Interagency Task Force on Tobacco Control was established by the Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1999 to coordinate the tobacco control work being carried out by different United Nations agencies. It is chaired by WHO and comprises 17 Agencies of the United Nations system and 2 organizations outside the UN system.

In line with ECOSOC Resolution 1999/56, the Secretary-General reported to the Economic and Social Council at its Substantive Session of 2000 on progress made by the Task Force in the implementation of multisectoral collaboration on tobacco or health, with particular emphasis on the development of appropriate strategies to address the social and economic implications of the impact of tobacco or health initiatives online report.

Since then, a report of the Secretary-General has been presented to ECOSOC at its Substantive Session every two years. These reports have focused on specific areas of concern for tobacco control where interagency collaboration can be important. These include, among others, areas of interagency collaboration for the implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the link between tobacco and poverty, and exposure to second-hand tobacco smoke. The reports can be accessed below.
