World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe Conference on the Regulation of Tobacco Products on 18 October 1999 in Helsinki, Finland
The World Health Organization, European Regional Office held a conference on the regulation of tobacco products in Helsinki on 18 October 1999. The purpose of the conference was twofold: first, the conference identified the most appropriate regulatory actions for a comprehensive effort to reduce smoking-related death and disease; second, the conference suggested regulatory changes that could lead to improved public health. The observations and issues were strongly based on experience with prior regulatory approaches and new scientific findings and assessments of tobacco products. Additionally, many insights were shared and discussed that arose from evaluations of tobacco industry documents not publicly available prior to the recent investigation of the tobacco industry by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
