Cardiovascular harms from tobacco use and secondhand smoke
Global gaps in awareness and implications for action
Overview
This report brings together data from two ongoing major global tobacco research and surveillance studies – the International Tobacco Control Policy Evaluation Project (the ITC Project) at the University of Waterloo and the Global Tobacco Surveillance System – to examine smokers and non-smokers’ awareness of the cardiovascular risks of tobacco use, and secondhand smoke exposure. The World Heart Federation led this initiative with the objective to actively engage cardiologists and heart specialists in tobacco control by informing them about significant gaps in public knowledge and perceptions of heart disease risks related to smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke
The report is the product of collaboration between the World Heart Federation, the ITC Project at the University of Waterloo Canada and the World Health Organization.
