Malta consultation on effective collaboration between health and financial sectors for tobacco control
The Malta consultation, which took place in St. Julian, Malta on 7 and 8 September 2001 was hosted by the government of Malta and co-sponsored by WHO and the World Bank. The Malta consultation explored the means of effective collaboration between various government sectors in implementing tobacco-control programmes. More specifically, its objectives were to:
- Consider mechanisms for stimulating the widest possible collaboration between Ministries of Health and Ministries of Finance for the development and implementation of effective national tobacco-control programmes;
- Discuss the public health evidence base for an economic strategy for tobacco control;
- Inform Ministries of Finance about the ongoing negotiations on the WHO FCTC, in order to compile the economic evidence base to support binding global provisions.
