The 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH)
The 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health (WCTOH) is scheduled to take place in Mumbai, India on 8-12 March 2009. The theme is Global Tobacco Control: Multi Sectoral Approach to Tobacco Control: Policies, Pathways, Partners and People.
The WCTOH provides an extraordinary opportunity to interact with a vast and diverse assemblage of tobacco control advocates, educators, policymakers, regulators, civil society members, renowned scientists and scholars from around the globe. Gathering presenters and participants from a variety of countries, economies, and stages of tobacco epidemic, the WCTOH aims to advance tobacco control in a number of ways in both developing and developed countries, including generating interest and greater involvement of different stakeholders, and providing a global perspective on tobacco control issues.
It has been twelve years since the conference was last hosted in a developing nation. In that time, it has become apparent that preventing the tobacco industry from establishing a foothold in the developing world is imperative in order to avoid the further spread of the tobacco epidemic.
The WCTOH will also provide an opportunity for participants from developing countries to obtain information on education, strategy development, networking, and resource mobilization. WHO has a crucial role in promoting tobacco control and intends to continue to provide policy and regulatory policies to all Member States. As a Technical Sponsor for the 14th WCTOH, WHO will serve in a role that actively facilitates discussion and implementation of successful tobacco control strategies.
