8. International Health Regulations and Epidemic Control

Other international agreements on notification of sudden health hazards (1)

  • International Atomic Energy Agency: Convention on Early Notification of a Nuclear Accident, Vienna 1986
  • Codex Alimentarius Commission: Codex Guidelines for the Exchange of Information in Food Control Emergency Situations, 1995
  • UN Economic Commission for Europe: Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents, Helsinki 1992

One important input to the revision of IHR is to look at other, similar, international agreements that deal with the duty to report a sudden health hazard in one country that is threatening other countries, of which there are a surprisingly large number.

All of these listed here are more recent than the IHR, and there are numerous lessons that could be drawn for the IHR revision process (e.g. several of these agreements contain rather elaborated dispute resolution processes, something that will probably have to be incorporated in a revised IHR).
