WHO monitoring project on Poverty Reduction Strategies (PRSPs)
WHO has developed a program of work to systematically monitor the place of health in Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers or PRSPs. The project analyzes the health component of the PRSP from a pro-poor perspective, and looks at how far the overall PRSP document recognizes investments in health as important to poverty reduction. The overall aim is to examine whether the PRSPs are leading to the creation of more "pro-poor" health policies in low-income countries. A desk review of a number of PRSPs has been carried out using a standardized analytical framework and a preliminary report summarizing the findings and lessons learnt has been published: PRSPs – Their Significance for Health. The individual desk reviews will soon be available on the WHO PRSP database, which is expected to be on-line by September 2003. Poverty Reduction Strategy Papers: Their Significance for Health: second synthesis report (WHO/HDP/PRSP/04.1)
World Health Organization, 2004
PRSPs: Their Significance for Health: second synthesis report looks at PRSPs from a health perspective. Published in January 2004, it is a second synthesis report based on desk reviews of PRSPs from 21 countries. The PRSPs were reviewed using a standardized analytical framework which examines the links between ill-health and poverty, good health and economic growth, and looks at whether the health strategies put forward in PRSPs respond to the health needs of the poor.
