AAVP history and structure
Introduction to AAVP
On 14 June 2000, a group of African scientists, meeting in Nairobi, adopted "The Nairobi Declaration: An African Appeal for an AIDS Vaccine", pledging to use their personal and collective commitment and expertise in the development and implementation of an African Strategy for AIDS Vaccines.
AAVP's vision is an AIDS-free Africa through an effective vaccine. Its mission is to promote HIV vaccine development for Africa, through research, advocacy, partnership, and contribution to capacity strengthening and policy development.
With encouragement and support from WHO and UNAIDS, AAVP has become a strong network of African HIV vaccine stakeholders, committed to HIV vaccine development for Africa.
At present the AAVP is housed under the IVR team of WHO's department of Immunization Vaccines and Biologicals. By the end of 2009 however, the AAVP will be an independent unit.
