Strategic Directions and Work Areas
There are currently numerous scientific, financial and logistic challenges facing the development of an effective HIV vaccine for Africa. Only through intensive national, regional and international collaboration can these challenges be overcome. To address those challenges and to better work with global partners involved in HIV vaccine R&D, AAVP adopted a new 5 year Strategic Plan (2007-2011). The plan is guided by five strategic directions: (1) capacity strengthening; (2) advocacy; (3) policy development; (4) increased community involvement; and (5) networking. To implement these strategic directions, there are five "work areas", under which priority activities are cross-cutting: (1) country-based strategic planning; (2) regulatory issues; (3) biomedical research; (4) communication and media; and (5) ethics, law and human rights.
