Coordinating and Resource Facility on Ethics, Law and Human Rights

The AAVP Coordinating and Resource Facility on Ethics, Law and Human Rights works at the interface of ethics, law, human rights and behavioural science, addressing key issues in HIV vaccine research and development and HIV vaccine trials. It plays an important role in assisting the entire field and preparing to deal with sensitive ethical issues.

This Facility engages in specialized training for institutional review boards in the ethics of HIV vaccine trials, developing publications on key ethical issues (e.g. intellectual property, ownership of data, adolescent participation in HIV research, access to treatment, consultation on ethical challenges with vaccine trial-site researchers), and conducting further research into developing a model ethical-legal framework. It is also responsible for setting up collaborative efforts with multiple African parties for training and capacity strengthening within involved countries.
