AAVP Roundtable Luncheon
The newly appointed AAVP High Representative, Her Excellency Mrs Jeanette Kagamé, the first lady of Rwanda hosted a Roundtable luncheon on research and development for an HIV Vaccine for Africa which was held on 11 June during the 2008 High Level Meeting on AIDS (HLM) at the United Nations headquarters in New York .
Participants included First Lady of Zambia; AIDS Ambassadors from donor countries, as well as Ministers from Ireland and Canada; and high level representation from public and private sector partners such as AVAC, IAVI, the Enterprise, World Bank, European HIV Funders Group and IFPMA .
WHO and UNAIDS were also represented at the highest level with the attendance of both Dr Peter Piot and Dr Margaret Chan who respectively gave a keynote speech and closing remarks.
In her opening remarks the first lady reiterated the commitment of African leaders in support of HIV vaccine R&D efforts, the vital role that AAVP is playing to facilitate HIV vaccine work in Africa and finally called upon the donor community to increase their support and commitment.
