Ms Murphy is Ghanaian-USA citizen. She completed her BA degree in French Translation with a Minor in Business Management in 1989 from St Mary-of-the-Woods College, in Indiana, USA. In 1992 she obtained a JD from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis, Indiana, and a MPL (with a focus on health planning) from the Indiana School of Public and Environmental Affairs in 1999.

Before joining WHO in January 2011, she was a Senior Consultant for 5 years at The Lewin Group, a health and human services consulting firm in Virginia, USA. She has also had 10 years of state government experience (in Indiana) in health and human services programmes for older people, persons with disability, and for persons with mental health needs. Within the WHO Department for Management of Noncommunicable Diseases, Disability, Violence and Injury Prevention (NVI), she provides technical support to countries on legislation and policy related to the Road Safety in 10 Countries Project and the Decade of Action for Road Safety as well as other violence and injury prevention programmes.
