Leaders from the Safe Communities movement convene in Norway to exchange ideas and experiences
13 June 2005 - On 13 June 2005, Dr Etienne Krug, Director of WHO's Department of Injuries and Violence Prevention, opened the 14th International Conference on Safe Communities in Bergen, Norway. The annual conference drew participants from public health, justice and police from over 60 countries. In 15 years, the Safe Communities movement - created by WHO and the Karolinska Institute, Sweden - has become a very effective global platform for adaptation and delivery of global injury and violence prevention messages at the community level. Conference themes included violence prevention; home, school and road safety; the costs and benefits of safety promotion; and the role of rescue services in creating safe communities.
