Association for Safe International Road Travel (ASIRT) grants award to WHO for leadership in global road safety
16 JUNE 2004 -- During a ceremony on Capitol Hill, Washington DC, USA, Dr Etienne Krug and the WHO Department of Injuries and Violence Prevention were attributed the Leadership in Global Road Safety award by ASIRT, the Association for Safe International Road Travel. The award is granted annually to individuals and institutions demonstrating leadership in international road safety. During the awards ceremony, Congressman Robert Wexler and ASIRT President, Mrs Rochelle Sobel, stressed the enormous contributions made by WHO through World Health Day 2004 and related activities. The two other recipients of this year's award were Ambassador Al Hinai, Ambassador Plenipotentiary of the Sultanate of Oman, and Dr Stephen Hartgarten, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin, USA. In relation to the award, a congressional caucus on international road safety was launched.
