WHO hosts informal consultation on action plan for disability and rehabilitation
19 April 2005 - From 11-12 April 2005 WHO hosted an informal consultation on development of a 2005-2010 Action Plan for Disability and Rehabilitation (DAR), which includes plans for a World Report on Disability and Rehabilitation. The meeting was attended by staff from the International Labour Office, professional organizations, leading disabled people's organizations and WHO headquarters and regional offices. The goal of the meeting was to finalize the draft DAR plan of action for the coming six years, to identify areas of collaboration with partners, and to explore ways to effectively implement WHO's Executive Board's draft resolution EB114.R3. The resolution calls upon Member States to strengthen national programmes, policies and strategies for the implementation of the United Nations Standard Rules on the Equalization of Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities and to develop their knowledge base with a view to promoting the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities and their full inclusion in society. Participants determined that the DAR plan of action will include raising awareness about disability and rehabilitation issues; promoting disability as part of the global public health and development agendas; mainstreaming disability in all areas of work within WHO; and strengthening data collection. Participants also agreed upon a process for the development of a World Report on Disability and Rehabilitation.
