Heads of WHO Collaborating Centers for Violence and Injury Prevention convene in Geneva
On 29-30 November, WHO hosted its 21st annual meeting of WHO Collaborating Centres for Violence and Injury Prevention. Dr Etienne Krug, WHO Director for VIP, presented on "Highlights of WHO's progress on violence and injury prevention: 2010-2011". Following his presentation, WHO regional advisers updated on their activities. A number of Heads of WHO Collaborating Centres then gave an update on specific collaborative projects.
A key discussion during the meeting focused on a draft strategy for the VIP Department, which will be finalized in 2012 based on the useful input received. Other topics included two new nascent networks: the Global Alliance for Care of the Injured and the Global Network for Child Injury Prevention; the use of social media to further violence and injury prevention; and the 11th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion. Working groups were held on topic-specific areas: road traffic injury prevention, violence prevention, child injury prevention and trauma care. A full report of the meeting will be available in the coming weeks.
