19th Meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) hosted in New York, USA
On 8-9 April in advance of the above discussion, WHO hosted the 19th Meeting of the UNRSC with participation of >100 people representing around 40 UNRSC member governments, NGOs, foundations and private companies. Keynote speaker H.E. Mr A. Florencio Randazzo, Minister of Transport of Argentina, updated on progress on road safety in his country. Dr Etienne Krug, WHO, gave an overview of progress in the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.
Participants discussed implementation of the new UN General Assembly resolution and shared ideas for future collaborative activities and events, including around the Second Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety, to be hosted by the Government of Brazil, and the Third UN Global Road Safety Week on children and road safety. These events will be hosted in 2015.
The group also reviewed a UNRSC membership request from the Fundación MAPFRE, which was accepted. Project groups convened on the five pillars of the Global Plan for the Decade of Action (road safety management, safer roads and mobility, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash care) as well as on monitoring and evaluating and work-related road safety. A full report of the meeting is forthcoming.
