Violence and Injury Prevention

Senior-level officials from francophone African ministries of health agree to step up efforts to prevent injuries and violence

22 September 2005

On 20 and 21 September 2005, the WHO Regional Office for Africa hosted the first ever meeting of senior-level officials from francophone African ministries of health on preventing injuries and violence. The objectives of the two-day meeting were to inform Ministry of Health officials about recent developments in the field and encourage them to increase action in their countries to prevent injuries and violence. The Ministry of Health representatives from participating countries adopted a Resolution describing the actions their ministries will take in the coming months with support from WHO: appointment of focal points for injury and violence prevention in the Ministries of Health, creation of multi-sectoral commissions, development of brief situation analysis to be presented at the upcoming 8th World Conference on Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion in Durban, South Africa in April 2006 and following that, the development of national action plans and training on injury and violence prevention.
