WHO hosts global consultation on violence against children in home and family settings

From 20–21 June 2005, WHO's Department of Injuries and Violence Prevention convened a consultation on understanding and preventing violence against children in home and family settings. The consultation, which took place in the context of preparations of a chapter of the UN Secretary General's Study on Violence Against Children, was one of five thematic consultations that will inform chapters on violence against children in different settings. Participants included experts in the fields of public health, child protection, criminal justice and human rights, and represented most regions of the world. In a concluding address to the meeting, Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, the Independent Expert in charge of the Study, highlighted how the challenges of preventing violence within the home and family can only be met using approaches that combine the strengths of public health, child protection and human rights.
