Implementation of the 5-year WHO strategy in Ethiopia
Title of project: Strengthening the road traffic injury data management capacity of the traffic police department in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
Status of implementation
- A situational assessment was completed and a draft report submitted to WHO HQ in 2003. Two draft articles, based on this situational assessment, have been developed and are being refined for publication.
- The project was formally launched on 25th February 2004, followed by an inception training of 450 traffic police officers. During the launch, the World Health Organization representative in Ethiopia, Dr. A. Babaniyi, presented three computers, one printer and 400 bags to the Addis Ababa Police Department Chief, Captain Tegodan. This equipment will be used to improve the data management capacity of the traffic police department.
- A data collection form has been developed (in Amharic - the national language) and is being tested.
- A database has been developed in Amharic for data entry and analysis.
- Training of 8 police officers in computer-based data entry, processing, analysis and report writing has started and will continue until the project is complete.
- A small resource centre has been established and will be furnished with relevant references and documents.
- Two stakeholder meetings have been held and it has been reported that there has been increased interaction and collaboration between different agencies.
- Dr. Tesfaye Mekonen, who worked on this project was appointed a national programme officer for injury and violence prevention in WHO office in Ethiopia. He has recently been accepted into the EIS course at CDC in Atlanta, USA - one of the first developing country injury epidemiologists to be enrolled in this prestigious course.
