- Obtain population based data that can be used to inform the national policy and to prioritize prevention efforts.
Activities
- Establishment of an emergency department based injury surveillance system
- A community based survey on injuries/violence.
The ED injury surveillance system is in place at Maputo Central Hospital and in 4 other provincial hospitals in Maputo city. There are plans to expand the system to all provincial level hospitals in the country. Data collection at Maputo Central Hospital began in January 2003, with minor revision in March 2003. The other hospitals started data collection in April 2004.
National Injury and Violence Survey: A 15-question module on injury and violence was included in the 2003 National Demographic and Health Survey. This will provide more detailed information on the causes and circumstances leading to injuries and violence. Final report will be available in January 2005.
