Violence robs and scars lives worldwide with nearly 1.6 million lives lost and 16 million injuries caused by violence every year. From the streets of Glasgow to Johannesburg, from the homes and schools of Edinburgh to Sao Paulo, violence exists, but it can be stopped.

In 2009 WHO and the University of St Andrews supported by the Scottish Government have come together to work with selected low-income and middle-income countries over 5 years to build a holistic policy response to interpersonal violence through shared learning, technical assistance and capacity development.

Many countries have responded to this serious public health problem by developing policies and programmes to prevent violence. The evidence for what violence prevention strategies work is steadily expanding. However, as a relatively new area there is still a need to better understand exactly how policy can contribute to preventing violence, particularly in low-income and middle-income countries.
