1st Milestones of a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention meeting

Date: 12-13 January 2004
Location: Geneva, Switzerland

A panel representing five of the founding participants announced the launch of the Violence Prevention Alliance (VPA; then known as the Global Interpersonal Violence Prevention Alliance) during the Milestones of a Global Campaign for Violence Prevention meeting. Panellists identified the VPA launch as the start of an important new implementation phase in WHO’s Global Campaign for Violence Prevention, highlighting its underlying vision—to create a network of institutions linked by their voluntary adoption of shared violence prevention principles and policies derived from the World report on violence and health. Following the launch, guests and speakers were invited to join an afternoon working group on VPA. Twenty individuals representing most world regions and different sectors took part in this working group and discussed the concept of the alliance and how they would like to see it function. There was consensus that such an alliance would add value to the violence prevention field, and several constructive suggestions concerning role, structure and areas of focus were made.
