Water, sanitation and hygiene are critical in the prevention and management of all of the neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) scheduled for intensified control, elimination or eradication by 2020. Sanitation play a key role in preventing exposure to diseases such as soil-transmitted helminth infections, schistosomiasis, or trachoma, while safe water and hygienic conditions in health facilities and in homes are essential for the treatment and care of many NTDs including wound management and surgeries. A global strategy has been launched to strengthen efforts on water, sanitation and hygiene to accelerate progress against neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) by 2020.
