Environmental technology verification (ETV)

Environmental technology verification (ETV)is included in the plan of work of the rolling revision of the WHO Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality.

Background

Environmental technology verification is an important component of strategies towards drinking-water safety and is inadequately addressed in the Third Edition of the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality. The Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality Final Task Force meeting (Geneva, 2003) recommended that ETV be addressed. The Protection and Control Working Group was asked to identify where best to address ETV and decide on a plan of action.

Expected end-product(s)

Brief statements for insertion in sections 1.2.9, 2.3, 3.2.2 (with cross-reference to microbial target derivation), 4.1.7 and relevant sections of chapter 6 (e.g., safe drinking-water for travellers), and possibly a separate new section in the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality on ETV, for inclusion in the second addendum of the third edition; free-standing supporting monograph on ETV in safe household water treatment and storage

Progress to date

The proposed actions were agreed at the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality Working Group meeting (Geneva, 2004). The Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality Working Group meeting (Geneva, 2005) agreed to a revised plan of work.
